Living cells undergo cellular respiration, which gives the cell the energy it needs to carry out its metabolic processes.

Glucose ( #C6H12O6#) is the substrate. It is broken down into #CO2# and #H2O# in presence of #O2#, with the liberation of energy in form of ATP molecules.

The two phases of cellular respiration are glycolysis and the Kreb's cycle, also known as the citric acid cycle.

Glycolysis is the process of breaking down glucose into fructose 1,6 diphosphate, which is then broken down into two molecules of pyruvic acid. This process takes place in the absence of oxygen.

Pyruvic acid is converted into oxalacetate that enters Kreb's cycle . Kreb's cycle occurs in presence of oxygen. During Kreb's cycle, #CO2# and #NADPH2# are produced. #NADPH2# is oxidised into #NADP# in presence of #O2# to generate ATP molecules. This process is termed oxidative phosphorylation .
