What are the general properties of alkali metals?

Answer 1

Alkali metals are soft sivery grey metals which react vigourous to violently with water producing a hydroxide and hydrogen gas.

The alkali metals, which make up the least electronegative elements in the periodic table, prefer to lose their outer electron in order to form a cation with an oxidation state of +1. Lithium, the lightest element in the alkali metal group, reacts with water vigorously to form LiOH, whereas sodium is slightly more reactive due to an increased distance between the nucleus and the outer electron.

Answer 2

The alkali metal family comprises lithium, sodium, potassium, rubidium, cesium, and francium. Alkali metals are soft, highly reactive metals with low melting points that exhibit a single positive oxidation state, readily form ionic compounds with nonmetals, and react violently with water to produce hydroxides and hydrogen gas.

When evaluating a one-sided limit, you need to be careful when a quantity is approaching zero since its sign is different depending on which way it is approaching zero from. Let us look at some examples.
