What are some examples of kinetic theory?
A large number of molecules are present, but the space they occupy is also large and keeps the individual molecules far apart (as Rutherford proved: here). The theory of kinetics describes the random motion of atoms. It is predicated on four premises: 1. The molecules move randomly; 2. The collisions between molecules are elastic and therefore exert no net forces; and 3. The molecules obey Newtonian mechanics.
Examples of kinetic theory include Boyle's, Charles', and Gay-Lussac's Laws governing the behavior of gases, as well as Brownian Motion, which describes the random movement of dust particles due to collisions with "air" molecules. Kinetic theory also explains how temperature affects the states of substances.

When evaluating a one-sided limit, you need to be careful when a quantity is approaching zero since its sign is different depending on which way it is approaching zero from. Let us look at some examples.

- A #4 L# container holds #4 # mol and #4 # mol of gasses A and B, respectively. Groups of four of molecules of gas B bind to three molecule of gas A and the reaction changes the temperature from #280^oK# to #320^oK#. By how much does the pressure change?
- A #5 L# container holds #15 # mol and #6 # mol of gasses A and B, respectively. Every three of molecules of gas B bind to two molecule of gas A and the reaction changes the temperature from #360K# to #210K#. By how much does the pressure change?
- A #7 L# container holds #28 # mol and #12 # mol of gasses A and B, respectively. Groups of three of molecules of gas B bind to five molecules of gas A and the reaction changes the temperature from #150^oK# to #160^oK#. How much does the pressure change?
- Light with a frequency of #2.79 * 10^15 Hz# strikes a metal surface and ejects electrons that have a maximum kinetic energy of #6.4 eV#. What is the work function of metal?
