The Nazca plate being forced under the South American plate is an example of a destructive plate boundary. Destructive plate boundaries occur when oceanic and continental plates move together. In these locations, the oceanic plate is forced, or subducted, under the continental plate. The friction from this causes the oceanic plate to melt, which can cause earthquakes and/or volcanic eruptions.
