The Initial Trip to Japan

On July 8, 1853, Commodore Matthew Perry made his first trip to Japan. He went to Edo (now Tokyo), the capital of Japan, and made demands. Among other things, he asked that ports be opened to American trade and that prisoners be treated humanely before being released. Perry withdrew from Japan, knowing that he would return.
