The larger of two numbers is 15 more than three times the smaller number. If the sum of the two numbers is 63, what are the numbers?

The numbers are #12 # and #51#

Given that : The larger of two numbers is 15 more than three times the smaller number. ---------------(fact 1)

And

The sum of the two numbers is 63.----------(fact 2)

Let the smaller number be #x#,

So from fact 2, the other number(i.e. the larger number) will be #63 - x#

So now we have,

Smaller number is #x# and Larger number is #(63-x)#

According to fact 1,

#63- x = 15+3x#

We will find #x# from this.

#63- 15=+3x+ x #

#48 = 4x#

#=> x = 12#

So we have :

Smaller number = #x =12# and Larger number= #63-12 = 51#

#therefore# The numbers are #12 # and #51#
