Lyell introduced Darwin to the concept that populations of organisms undergo long-term changes rather than the instantaneous mutations that other biologists had hypothesized.

According to the dominant biological theory put forth by Jean-Baptiste Lamarck, an organism acquires traits during its lifetime and then passes those traits on to its progeny. For example, if I were to work out a lot and gain a lot of muscle before becoming a parent, my progeny would naturally be naturally muscular.

Darwin began to question this theory in light of Lyell's theories, which inspired him to take a different approach. This led him to propose that natural selection operates over many generations at the population level rather than on the level of individual organisms.
