Is there absolute indisputable scientific evidence of Earth's age?

Answer 1

There is no such thing as indisputable scientific evidence.

The foundation of all natural sciences is observation and modeling. Our models may closely match our observations and offer reliable predictions that are verified by additional observations, etc.; however, there is no way to know if these models are accurate.

When more accurate observations are made, scientific models are typically improved. Take Newton's Laws of Motion, for instance. While they are still helpful, they are no longer regarded as "true" in the sense of being completely accurate, particularly when traveling at speeds close to the speed of light, etc.

That having been said, the age of the Earth has been assessed by various radiometric measurements which are in good agreement, placing the age of the Earth at #4.54+-0.05 xx 10^9# years.

On the other hand, let's take another tack and consider the idea that the universe was created ten years ago. You could cite a variety of proofs that the universe is older than ten years, such as your own memories, objects that seem older than ten years, the depth of cultural diversity, light from stars that appear to be farther away than ten light years, etc. I could counter that all of those are fabrications, designed to deceive you into believing that the universe is older than ten years.

Despite the absurdity of this argument, I have refuted your evidence.

When evaluating a one-sided limit, you need to be careful when a quantity is approaching zero since its sign is different depending on which way it is approaching zero from. Let us look at some examples.
