The terms "digestive tract" and "gastrointestinal tract" are often used interchangeably, but technically, there is a slight difference. The digestive tract refers to the entire pathway through which food travels from the mouth to the anus, including the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, and anus. The gastrointestinal tract specifically refers to the portion of the digestive tract where digestion and absorption of nutrients primarily occur, which includes the stomach, small intestine, and large intestine. So, while the digestive tract encompasses the entire pathway, the gastrointestinal tract focuses on the digestive and absorptive functions of the stomach and intestines.
