In chordates, what is the long supporting rod that runs through the body called?

Mesodermal skeletal rod supporting body of chordate, in embryonic stage, is called notochord .

Please remember that in most chordates, notochord is partly or fully replaced by vertebral column.
Then there are some, which lose the notochord during metamorphosis.
And only a single small group, called lancelets, retain the notochord throughout life.
Accordingly, Phylum Chordata is divided in three subphyla:
1. Vertebrata (=Craniata)
2. Tunicata
3. Cephalochordata
