Imagine you have a mattress, that is 160 units wide, 200 units long and 20 units thick. If you want to buy a bed sheet that fits the mattress, with a 5 unit overlap on all sides, what are the dimensions of the sheet?

Answer 1

Dimensions of the sheet should be #250xx210# units.

Length and breadth of the mattress is #200xx160# units.

Now the overlap should #20# units for the thickness and #5# units additional overlap on each side i.e a total of #25# units on each side.

as such while length should be #200+2xx25=200+50=250# units

and width should be #160+2xx25=160+50=210# units

i.e. dimensions of the sheet should be #250xx210# units.

When evaluating a one-sided limit, you need to be careful when a quantity is approaching zero since its sign is different depending on which way it is approaching zero from. Let us look at some examples.
