If we bury organic matter deep enough, would it produce fossil fuels?

And is there any project you know of doing it already?

Answer 1

No

Fossil fuel production requires reductant microorganisms that remove oxygen atoms from organic compounds; these can occur in the deep earth, landfills (where methane must be collected), waste water treatment plants, and especially in biologic digestors. Burying organic matter alone is not sufficient to produce fossil fuels.

Answer 2

No, fossil fuels are formed from the remains of ancient marine plants and microorganisms that underwent specific geological processes over millions of years. Burying organic matter deep does not replicate these conditions.
