If the star's core is massive enough, it will collapse into a black hole, but it cannot sustain fusion reactions to stop the star from collapsing under gravity.

To put it simply, a black hole is a massive, but relatively small, object that revolves around gravity. It can only take in matter that falls into it; matter expelled during a supernova explosion is too far away and moving too quickly for the black hole's gravity to hold onto.
