At more than 13 billion years old, the Milky Way galaxy is nearly as old as the universe itself.

Considering that the Sun is only 4.6 billion years old, some of the hydrogen that makes up the Sun would have existed in the early galaxy and some would have come from galactic collisions.

Large stars that were born, completed their main sequence lives, and then burst into supernovae long before the Sun would have been responsible for the creation of the heavier elements in our solar system.
