How was Coulomb's law discover?

Using the following straightforward method, Coulomb came up with charges q/4, q/8, etc. by continuing the above step and varying the distance between a fixed pair of charges and measuring the force. In the following step, he varied the charges in pairs and kept them at fixed separations. If there is a q charge in a small metallic sphere and we touch it with another similar uncharged sphere, then by the symmetry, the charges on each of the spheres become q/2 due to redistribution.

He measured the force with a torsion balance.

So, without explicitly knowing the magnitude of the charge, he ultimately arrived at the law that is known as Coulomb's law. Pretty amazing, huh?
