How many types of blood cells are there?
Three broad types: erythrocytes, leucocytes, and thrombocytes, with subtypes. See below.
Blood contains three broad types of blood cells.
Erythrocytes (Red Blood Cells/Corpuscles) are cells that carry oxygen to parts of the body for energy. They contain haemoglobin which binds with oxygen in the lungs.
Leucocytes (White Blood Cells/Corpuscles) are cells that help in fighting infection and confer temporary as well as lasting immunity to different antigens. There are three different subtypes of leucocytes: lymphocytes, monocytes, and granulocytes; again, there are three types of granulocytes: eosinophils, basophils, and neutrophils. Monocytes produce macrophages in response to an infection.
Thrombocytes (Platelets) are cells that help in clotting of blood when a blood vessel is ruptured.
