How is IR spectroscopy read?
Infra red spectroscopy is read or interpreted by identifying where in the infra red spectrum a functional group in a molecule vibrates.
A molecule is exposed to infrared light in an infra red spectrophotometer, which causes the bonds to vibrate at specific wavenumbers that can be plotted on paper and measured in reciprocal centimeters. For instance, in carbonyl compounds, the wavenumber of the carbonyl groups stretches from 1600 to 1800 reciprocal centimeters, and that of the hydroxy groups is from 4000 to 3500 reciprocal centimeters.
