Coal is formed from the decay and later coalification of vegetative matter - plants. When these plants were alive they were utilizing solar energy via photosynthesis.

Photosynthesis when combined with water and nutrients provides the nutrients plants need to thrive. Once the plant dies, these organic compounds (with the contained energy from the sun) compress over long periods of time - called coalification.
