The speed of their orbit is influenced by their altitude above the Earth's surface, but it's primarily determined by the balance between the gravitational force pulling them toward the Earth and the centrifugal force pushing them away as they orbit. The closer a satellite is to the Earth, the faster it needs to travel to maintain its orbit.
