How does the widespread study of environmental science affect government policy?

Answer 1

Awareness has a big impact.

As with most denialists of evolution, most opponents of environmentally friendly policies are ignorant of the concept; if you're studying environmental science, you're probably discovering that many of the policies designed to lessen human impact on the environment also happen to be politically and economically advantageous.

Furthermore, you become aware of the numerous negative effects that unsustainable policies and behaviors have on the environment and on ourselves—effects that the uneducated person is most likely unaware of.

As more people become interested in environmental science, this will probably have an impact on voter behavior, political candidates, and the laws that are proposed and enacted by the government.

Recent research I've read claims that "including scientists and scientific information will improve the quality of complex policy decisions." (Source at the bottom) While this particular research focuses on scientists, it makes sense to argue that more people with access to scientific information—in this case, environmental science—will influence environmental policy decisions made by the government.

The widespread study of environmental science influences government policy by providing scientific evidence and data on environmental issues, which policymakers use to develop regulations and make informed decisions regarding resource management, pollution control, conservation efforts, and climate change mitigation strategies.
