The carbon cycle describes the movement of carbon through Earth's atmosphere, biosphere, geosphere, and hydrosphere. Carbon is exchanged between these reservoirs through processes such as photosynthesis, respiration, decomposition, combustion, and weathering. Carbon dioxide is taken up by plants during photosynthesis, converted into organic matter, and passed through the food chain. When organisms respire, carbon dioxide is released back into the atmosphere. Decomposition of organic matter also releases carbon dioxide. Additionally, carbon is stored in fossil fuels and rock formations, and can be released through volcanic activity and erosion. Human activities, such as burning fossil fuels and deforestation, have disrupted the balance of the carbon cycle, leading to increased atmospheric carbon dioxide levels and contributing to climate change.
