Parallax is inversely proportional to the distance.

The apparent shift in a nearby star's position relative to farther-off stars during Earth's orbit around the Sun is known as stellar parallax.

To compute stellar parallax, use the following formula:

d = #1 / p#

wherein

P is the parallax in arcsecs, and d is the distance in parsecs.

Consequently, the greater the distance, the smaller the parallax, which is inversely proportional to the distance.

Proxima Centauri is a nearby star that is 4.25 light years away, or 1.31 parsecs away.

One can determine its parallax by,

p = #1/d#
p = #1/1.31#
p = #0.763# arcsecs
