How does ozonolysis work?

Answer 1

Usually very well....

Trioxygen gas, #O=stackrel(+)O-O^(-)#, is a POTENT oxidant....and given an ozone generator, this usually works on EVERYTHING, including the oxidation of olefinic bonds...which are otherwise fairly unreactive. You should look up your organic text for details.

Workup of the ozonolysis product may be optimized to give either carboxyl or carbonyl products...oxidatively or reductively....

Answer 2

Ozonolysis is a chemical reaction where ozone (O3) reacts with a compound, typically an alkene or alkyne, to form ozonides or carbonyl compounds. The reaction proceeds through the initial formation of a cyclic ozonide intermediate, which then decomposes to yield carbonyl compounds or other products, depending on the reaction conditions. Ozone cleaves the double or triple bond of the alkene or alkyne, leading to the formation of oxygen-containing functional groups.

When evaluating a one-sided limit, you need to be careful when a quantity is approaching zero since its sign is different depending on which way it is approaching zero from. Let us look at some examples.
