Ecology by definition is the relationship of one organism to another or to their physical surroundings.

The types of trees found near the arctic circle are completely different from those found at the equator. To put it simply, those living plants and animals vary greatly between arid lands such as a desert and a swamp.

The outer layer of a cactus is extremely tough and waxy; this is the natural defense mechanism of the plant against the escape of its internal water into the atmosphere.

The question you probably have is how man interacts with his environment, which is a great reason to study this topic. Man has a terrible tendency to upend entire food chains by settling in a new place, which naturally disturbs the ecology of that area.

An excellent illustration of this is the situation with the Canadian Goose, which by nature prefers to spend the summers in Canada and migrates to the Carolinas in the winter. The primary reason for the goose's migration is food availability; however, because man has constructed towns and cities where geese, who are naturally scavengers, have abundant food supplies, the goose no longer migrates as much as it once did.
