Since the atmosphere is present, the planet must have both air pressure (without which it would be in a vacuum) and the gases—oxygen and carbon dioxide—necessary for life to exist on Earth.

The atmosphere affects the planet in the same ways that weather affects Earth because weather also happens in the atmosphere.

Ultimately, the sun's damaging UV rays are absorbed by the ozone layer.

To correct some misleading information from the other answer, the magnetosphere—rather than the atmosphere—protects the planet from the most harmful solar radiation, with the exception of UV light, which is blocked by the ozone layer. The atmosphere does not stop gases from escaping to space; rather, the atmosphere IS the gases.
