Alkenes are named by identifying the longest carbon chain containing the double bond, numbering the chain to give the double bond the lowest possible number, and then adding the suffix "-ene" to the root name of the alkane corresponding to the number of carbon atoms in the chain. If the double bond occurs between two different carbon chains, the names of both chains are included, along with the location of the double bond. Additionally, cis and trans isomers are indicated if necessary to denote the spatial arrangement of substituents around the double bond.
