How do you compare #49/6, 42/12#?

General method is to take them to the same denominator.

#49/6xx2/2=(49xx2)/(6xx2)=98/12# greater than #42/12#

But you may have noticed that #42and12# are both even:

#42/12=(cancel2xx21)/(cancel2xx6)=21/6# smaller than #49/6#
