How do villi aid absorption in the small intestine?

Answer 1

Increase surface area for absorption

Villi are tiny, fingerlike projections on the lining of the small intestines. As they protrude out, they increase the surface area in with digested nutrients can be absorbed. Larger surface area means more material can be absorbed and at a faster rate, as more of the lining is exposed to the material to absorb it.

Answer 2

Villi are tiny projections that resemble fingers that line the inside of the small intestine. They greatly increase the surface area available for absorption and are made up of a network of capillaries and a lacteal, both of which are essential for carrying nutrients into the body after they have been absorbed. The capillaries take up amino acids and simple sugars directly into the bloodstream, while the lacteals, which are a part of the lymphatic system, take up fatty acids and glycerol. This arrangement makes it possible for the body to absorb nutrients from food that has been digested efficiently.
