Organisms known as producers use sunlight to create food, and consumers eat the producers.

The first trophic level contains producers, and the levels above them contain consumers. When you start to look at the numbers, the levels resemble a pyramid.

The producers are the base of the pyramid; without them, there could be no other life. The primary consumers are at the next level, and secondary consumers are at the third level.

Very few ecosystems can support four levels, and the majority can only support three.
