Due to the unpredictability of water availability and water table depth, drilling for water can be a difficult task in many places.
The first step is to examine the local geology and look for structures that are likely to support water by using the available geological maps.
Water will collect within the permeable layer, which is typically a layer of permeable rock (sandstone or fractured limestone) underlain by impermeable levels (clay, for example).
An "artesian" aquifer is one in which the permeable level is occasionally sandwiched between two impermeable levels, and the water in it can be pressurized to the point where the well will spontaneously flow at the surface. Lateral formations replenish this type of aquifer by directing rainwater infiltration towards the permeable level.
Water at depth can be detected using geophysics techniques, which rely on variations in electric conductivity brought on by the water.
Lastly, bore holes can be drilled to evaluate the strata's geological sequence and locate strata that might support an aquifer.
It is reasonable to say that finding water frequently requires some degree of luck, especially in difficult and complex geological settings.
