Nebulae are colored by the gases they contain and the kinds of light they emit or reflect. For example, gases that contain hydrogen typically emit red light, while gases that contain oxygen typically emit green or blue light, and gases that contain nitrogen typically emit violet light. Dust particles can also absorb and scatter light, changing the color of the nebula overall.
