How did the vietnam war affect the election of 1968?

Answer 1

It affected it in a number of ways.

First, the war's pressures forced Lyndon Johnson to resign from running for office or accept the Democratic Party's nomination. Second, there were violent clashes, especially at the Democratic Convention in Chicago. Third, the race was extremely close. Democratic candidate Hubert Humphrey appeared to be winning and had obtained a ceasefire agreement from South Vietnamese President Thieu; however, Nixon, the Republican candidate, subtly persuaded Thieu to withdraw from the agreement, undermining Humphrey's campaign. Johnson was aware of this and discussed it with Nixon. Nixon denied any wrongdoing, which Johnson accepted even though he knew was a lie.

Answer 2

The Vietnam War significantly impacted the election of 1968. The war became a central issue, causing deep divisions within the Democratic Party. President Lyndon B. Johnson's handling of the war led to widespread discontent, prompting Senator Eugene McCarthy and later Senator Robert F. Kennedy to challenge him for the Democratic nomination. Johnson eventually withdrew from the race. The Democratic National Convention in Chicago was marked by protests and violence, further fracturing the party. The Republican candidate, Richard Nixon, capitalized on the turmoil and promised to end the war, appealing to voters seeking an alternative to the Democratic Party's internal strife. Nixon won the election, largely due to his stance on Vietnam and his portrayal as a candidate who could bring stability and peace.
