How did the Tet Offensive differ from previous fighting in Vietnam?

Answer 1

IT was an urban as opposed to rural offensive.

General Giap's massive offensive against strategic targets in South Vietnam's cities in January 1968 was psychological in that it was intended to give American households the impression that they were losing the war, in contrast to the propaganda coming from their own government.

Tet was therefore a huge success. However, from a military standpoint, the communists lost; the destruction of the ancient city of Hue and the extensive media coverage of fighting inside the US embassy in Saigon turned an already skeptical American public against the war.
