How did Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal coalition affect African American voting patterns?
For the first time ever, most Blacks voted Democratic.
The Democrats had a conservative wing known as the Dixiecrats, which survived the 1960s and 1970s but essentially died with George Wallace. In the years preceding the Civil War, the Republicans were the party of Northern abolitionists and the Democratic Party was the party of Southern planters. FDR brought Black voters into the Democratic Party in large numbers, while William Howard Taft brought Northern business interests into the Republican Party.
The two parties—practically the only two since 1860—flipped positions in the early 20th century, and it's possible that they'll do so once more this election cycle. If either party ever held any particular beliefs, it's unclear now which ones they adhere to. The Democrats are nominally liberal, pro-choice, pro-business, and conservative, while Republicans are nominally conservative, anti-tax, and pro-small government. However, in actuality, both parties have been deeply compromised.
