How dangerous is placenta previa?

Answer 1

Placenta previa is a pregnancy complication in which placenta overlies or is proximate to the internal opening of the mothers cervix and can cause excessive bleeding during any stage of pregnancy.

A dangerous condition for both mother and child, dislodging of the placenta at the base of the uterus during the period of time when the cervix begins to open up can result in severe bleeding.

Issues related to placenta previa:

Bleeding Severe bleeding is the main complication that can happen. It poses a life-threatening risk and can result in hemorrhage, shock, or even death.

Preterm baby: An emergency C-section may be performed prior to full term due to severe bleeding.

Placenta accrete Detachment of the placenta becomes a serious issue if it attaches itself to the uterine wall too deeply; in most cases, this results in a hysterectomy.

The lower segment to which the placenta is attached contracts less well after delivery, increasing the risk of puerperal sepsis and postpartum hemorrhage. Fetal complications include hypoxia and death. Additional maternal complications include malpresentation, abnormal placentation, antepartum, and postpartum hemorrhage.
