The sum of the protons and neutrons is known as the nucleon number.

Apart from identifying isotopes of different atoms, the nucleon number, also known as A, does not lead to any particular property in and of itself. For instance, uranium has 92 protons in any form, but it can also have 140, 141, 142, 143, 144, or 146 neutrons; these isotopes have nucleon numbers of 232, 233, 234, 235, 236, and 238 (respectively).
