Elements are pure substances made up of only one kind of what?

Answer 1

Atom.

A chemical in its purest form is called an element.

In other words, it is made entirely of atoms of that kind.

If I had 1 mole of gold #(Au)#, I would have #6.022*10^23# gold atoms.
If I had 1 mole of silver #(Ag)#, I would have #6.022*10^23# silver atoms.

My point is that, in theory, there should only be atoms of the element you have. There are no oxygen, hydrogen, or carbon atoms. There are only atoms of that element.
