Zinc is used to prevent iron from corroding by covering the same iron with thin layers of zinc. Theoretically, this reaction should occur because zinc's redox potential is -0,76 V for distilled water and -0,42 V for neutral water. However, in practice, this reaction doesn't happen because it requires a high activation energy to develop a gas on its surface.
