Does citric acid cycle require oxygen?

Hi, no, the TCA, or citric acid cycle, does not require oxygen in and of itself. Rather, it needs acetyl CoA, a 2-carbon molecule, which will combine (merge) with oxaloacetic acid, a four-carbon organic acid, to produce the six-carbon molecule known as citrate, or citric acid.

Since this is a cycle, what does that entail?

In addition to the regeneration of oxaloacetic acid, two molecules of carbon dioxide will be created (or released), and ATP and NADH molecules will also be produced.

The ATP and NADH are the vital link in this process; oxygen is not involved in the Krebs or Citric Acid cycles.

In the subsequent phase, oxygen enters the picture when it is present at the 'end' of the electron transport chain, which is the inner mitochondrial membrane in Eukaryotes and the plasma membrane in Prokaryotes. Why is oxygen useful in these environments?
