Does Boyle’s Law state that as volume increases, pressure decreases or as pressure increases, volume decreases?

Answer 1

Boyle's Law states both that as volume increases pressure decreases and that as pressure increases volume decreases.

In addition to assuming that the material is a confined gas (i.e., that the amount of gas does not increase or decrease) and that the temperature does not change, Boyle's Law states that pressure and volume are inversely proportional.

There are two ways to state it mathematically:

#P prop 1/V#

or

#PV=k# where #k# is a constant

Boyle's Law thus asserts that while pressure decreases with increasing volume, volume decreases with increasing pressure.

When evaluating a one-sided limit, you need to be careful when a quantity is approaching zero since its sign is different depending on which way it is approaching zero from. Let us look at some examples.
