The two types of ecological succession include primary and secondary succession.

Primary succession: When an area is totally destroyed—for example, an island is blown away by a volcanic eruption—new organisms have to move in and take up residence. As they get bigger, they settle in the area and make it harder for other organisms to move in and take over.

Secondary succession is the result of partial or total destruction of an area, such as a forest fire; because the soil is still rich and fertile, secondary succession typically occurs more quickly and effectively than primary succession.

All of these things happen because it creates new opportunities for organisms to develop and adapt; more organisms follow newly introduced species in search of food in order to avoid competition and possible extinction.

There are also climax communities (also known as "normal" communities). Secondary succession always returns to the climax community, but occasionally human disturbances can occur that will wipe out the community entirely.
