Protons are charged massive particles with the opposite electric charge of electrons. They are thought to be tiny particles that revolve around the nuclear core.

Assigning a positive charge to the electron and a negative charge to the nuclear proton would have made a lot more sense because quantum chemists outnumber particle physicists in this field. This would have prevented generations of quantum chemists from getting the correct numerical answer but the incorrect sign when performing calculations on atoms with many electrons, counting odd when they should have counted even, or vice versa.
