A solution contains 0.3 liters of sulfuric acid. If this represents 12% of the total amount, how do you find the total amount?

Answer 1

The total amount of solution is 2.5 liters. Use a ratio proportion method.

This is more of an algebra problem than a chemistry problem.

0.3 liters = 12%

total volume = 100 %

Set up a ratio proportion.

# 0.3/x = 12/100# Solve for x

First multiply both sides by 100 x. This gives

# 100 xx x xx( 0.3/x) = 100 xx x xx ( 12/100) # This gives
#100 xx 0.3 = x xx 12 # This gives

30 = 12 x divide both sides by 12

# 30/12 = 12 x/12# This gives

2.5 = x

x = the total volume of the solutions.

When evaluating a one-sided limit, you need to be careful when a quantity is approaching zero since its sign is different depending on which way it is approaching zero from. Let us look at some examples.
