A rectangular parking lot has a perimeter of 310 meters. The length is 5 meters more than 4 times the width. What is the length and width?

Answer 1

Width is #30# meters and length is #125# meters.

Let the width of parking lot be #x# meters
as length of plot is #5# meters more than four times its width,
length is #4x+5#

and perimeter being twice the sum of length and breadth is

#2xx(x+4x+5)=2xx(5x+5)=10x+10#
As perimeter is #310#, we have #10x+10=310#
and so #10x=310-10=300# and #x=30#
Hence, width is #30# meters and length is #4xx30+5=125# meters.

When evaluating a one-sided limit, you need to be careful when a quantity is approaching zero since its sign is different depending on which way it is approaching zero from. Let us look at some examples.
