How do plantations affect biodiversity?

Answer 1

low biodiversity

The plantations plant only one type of plant organism (this is also called a monoculture). Other plant organisms are destroyed to make room for the desired plants that produce cash crops.

Animals species diversity is also lowered. Animal and insect organisms that can not make use of the single plant organism either leave the area or die off. Animal and insect organisms that make used of the the pineapples, and bananas are considered to be pest. These organisms are destroyed with pesticides, or restricted with fences and nettings.

The plantations create islands of very low biodiversity.

Answer 2

Plantations can have significant impacts on biodiversity. They often involve the conversion of diverse natural habitats into monoculture landscapes, which reduces the overall variety of plant and animal species in the area. This loss of habitat can lead to declines in native species populations and may increase the risk of extinction for some species. Additionally, plantations typically require the use of agrochemicals such as pesticides and fertilizers, which can further degrade habitat quality and harm non-target species. Moreover, the establishment of plantations often involves the clearing of native vegetation, which can disrupt ecological processes and fragment habitats, making it more difficult for species to move and find suitable habitats. Overall, the expansion of plantations can result in significant losses of biodiversity and ecosystem services.
