Thus, there was no impact on the atmosphere due to the formation of the coal. There were few, if any, gaseous compounds released in the process. If the question intends a "sequestration" effect of carbon, it is incorrect to look to coal formation. The exchange and/or sequestration of carbon dioxide already occurred in the organic material, long before it became coal.

The formation of coal was affected by the atmosphere through the process of carbonization. This process occurred millions of years ago during the Carboniferous period when the atmosphere had higher levels of carbon dioxide. As plants died and decomposed in swampy environments, the high levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere facilitated the accumulation of organic material without complete decomposition. Over time, this organic material was buried and subjected to heat and pressure, leading to the formation of coal.
