Groundwater, lakes (limnitic systems) and rivers

Many places get their water from groundwater supplies; in places where surface water is scarce, people drill wells to obtain groundwater.

People who live near lakes receive their water from lakes (limnitic systems). Most lakes contain freshwater, not salty water, but some do (Salt Lake (UTAH) in the USA, for example).

Rivers are excellent sources of water if they are not tainted by manmade or natural pollutants. Rivers also supply water.
