This stabilization is both steric, and electronic in origin (why?). #"Triphenylmethanol"# even produces a water stable carbocation, #Ph_3C^+#, which is strongly yellow in colour.

Bulky carbocations are more stable because the bulky groups surrounding the positively charged carbon atom help to disperse the positive charge, reducing the electron density at the central carbon atom and thus stabilizing the carbocation.
