Who is the father of chemistry?
Quite probably Antoine Lavoisier.
Lavoisier's wife was a highly accomplished physical scientist, and his approach to chemical science was highly quantitative, as evidenced by the scope and impact of his discoveries.
Because of his too close and profitable collaboration with the ancien régime, Lavoisier had his head chopped off in the late eighteenth century. His widow went on to marry Benjamin Thompson, Count Rumford, a highly accomplished physical scientist and experimentalist who was born in America and supported King George during the American War of Independence.
I can't find the quote, but Rumford talked about his later marriage to Madam Lavoisier, which probably gave him a lot of professional and social opportunities. He was also an unscrupulous scoundrel.
