DNA is made up of phosphate groups, nitrogen bases (adenine, guanine, cytosine, and thymine), and 5-carbon sugars. This 5-carbon sugar is called deoxyribose.
Deoxyribose is derived from ribose and differs in that a hydroxyl group has been replaced with hydrogen. An oxygen atom is lost (see image below).
